If you’ve ever found yourself struggling to roll out pastry dough without it sticking or tearing, don’t worry! In this blog post, I’ll share a simple way to roll out your pie crust and get it neatly into the pie plate. This method works wonderfully for both single and double-crusted pies. Of course as bakers know tricks like this do not always work. As all seasoned bakers know pie crust can be tricky. Sometimes it is too warm and no matter what you do it falls to pieces.

Gather Your Tools

Before you dive into the dough, it’s essential to gather the necessary tools. You’ll need:

  • A clean, flat surface (like a countertop or cutting board)

  • A rolling pin

  • Flour for dusting

  • Your prepared pie crust

  • A pie plate

  • Parchment paper (If you have a silicone rolling mat that works too.)

Once you have everything ready, it’ll make the whole process smoother!

Easy Steps to Roll Out Your Dough

Now, let’s get down to business. Here’s a simple method to roll out your pie crust:

  1. Prepare Your Dough: Make sure your pie crust is chilled. It should be firm but pliable. If it's too soft, pop it into the fridge for a bit longer.

  2. The Parchment: Cut a piece of parchment paper a little larger than your pie plate.

  3. Flour the Surface: Sprinkle a little flour on your paper and on your rolling pin. This helps prevent sticking, so you won’t be wrestling with your dough!

  4. Shape the Dough: Place your chilled pie crust in the center of the paper. Use your hands to flatten it slightly into a disk. This will make rolling easier.

  5. Roll It Out: Starting from the center of the disk, roll the dough outward toward the edges. Continue rolling the crust out until it is the right size for your plate. If it starts to stick, add more flour as needed.

  6. Transfer to the Pie Plate: Carefully lift the parchment paper with your crust. This is the hardest part. Gently flip it into the plate, if you got any tears carefully push the crust together in that spot until it is completely sealed. Now you hopefully have a hole free pie crust and you didn't have to piece it into the bottom of the pie plate.

  7. Trim Excess Dough: After laying the crust in the plate, you may notice some hangover. Trim any excess dough.

  8. For a Double Crust: If you are making a double crust pie just do the same thing for the top crust. Be extra careful with the top crust because it is harder to seal little holes since there is only filling under it.

And there you have it—a simple way to roll out your pie crust! The best part? Practice makes perfect; the more you do it, the easier it will become. Soon, you’ll be rolling crusts like a pro, ready to fill them with your favorite sweet or savory fillings. Get ready to impress your friends and family with your delicious pies!
